About Amy

A trailblazer in Athletic Administration, Amy Scheuneman broke the mold straight out of college as she became the youngest Athletic Director in the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) at the age of 22. She held that post in the Avonworth School District for three years until she assumed the same role in the Bethel Park School District where she became the first female Athletic Director in the WPIAL at a Quad A school, the largest classification for the PIAA at that time. Amy held the helm at Bethel Park for a decade and saw the school and athletic department through renovations and the construction of the new High School and athletic facilities. Scheuneman then served three more years as an Athletic Director in the North Hills School District before making her way to the WPIAL Office.

Serving briefly as the Associate Executive Director for the league, she quickly became the first female Executive Director of the WPIAL. During her time as Executive Director, Scheuneman successfully guided the WPIAL through the COVID-19 pandemic, making a way for all student-athletes to have meaningful athletic experiences and championships during the 2020-2021 school year when over half of the country had nothing that year. Along with the daily operational needs, she also focused on the creation and implementation of the Diversity & Inclusion Advisory Council, brought the League up to speed on social media and supported community service efforts such as the league-wide food drive and partnership with Special Olympics.

In June of 2022, Scheuneman made the decision to shift her career out of interscholastic athletics as she accepted the Director of Youth Programming position for P3R, the engine behind Pittsburgh’s greatest races. In her new role she continues to use sports and movement to expand opportunities to all youth 18 years and younger. Head of the award-winning Kids of Steel program, she also looks to expand the 4RUN2 program geared toward middle school and high school age students.

Regardless of how busy her schedule keeps her; Amy always makes herself available to help others. A member of three different halls of fame, she sets herself apart in whatever she does. An avid presenter at various conferences and college classrooms, Amy exemplifies what the “Women in Sports & Entertainment” stands for. She has also participated in and presented at several “National Girls & Women in Sports Day” events along with being a founding organizer and presenter during Lilian Abel’s “Your Personal Best” seminars. She continues to encourage and promote female participation in sports as well as help women succeed in the sports industry.

Scheuneman has been married to her husband Paul for over fourteen years and the two reside in Robinson Township with their 8-year-old son, Paul.

This year’s recipient of the 2022 Woman of Inspiration Award, Amy Scheuneman.
